Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Prof. Peter Katjavivi officially opened a capacity building workshop that is being conducted by the Common Wealth Association - UK Office. A delegation of UK Parliamentarians and officials from the CPA -UK are sharing experiences and skills with their Namibian counterparts and parliament staff in the areas of management of committees and parliamentary business as part of the CPA UK’s partnership programme (PPP) with the Namibian Parliament that started in 2017.
Speaking during the opening of the workshop, Hon. Katjavivi noted that because of limited resources, committees should begin to prioritise their activities in order to remain effective. “One of the key areas that I would like us to emphasize is committee strategy, purposely meant to maximize the effectiveness of the committee. Given the limited time and financial and staff resources, Committees should prioiritize tasks that should be accomplished within a given time frame”, noted Hon. Katjavivi.
He further implored Members of parliament to interrogate national issues without bias. “In the usual parliamentary tradition, Members are expected to interrogate issues brought before parliament if they happen to be of particular interest, irrespective whatever political affiliation. For instance, cross party approach of national importance”, noted the Speaker.
The visit by the delegation that ends tomorrow (16/04/19) has also included bilateral meetings with other stakeholders aimed at strengthening relations between Namibia and the United Kingdom.
