Speaker of the National Assembly leads Namibian delegation to the 206th Virtual Session of the IPU Governing Council, 01 – 04 November 2020

Windhoek- Speaker of the National Assembly Hon. Prof. Peter Katjavivi is leading the Namibian delegation participating in the virtual Session of the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) Governing Council. The meeting started on Sunday (01/11/2020). Among issues that are being discussed include the adoption of the IPU budget, the election of the IPU President and the human rights abuses against MPs.

Over 400 MPs from 140 countries across the world are participating in the virtual session. Yesterday (02/11/2020), saw the election of Hon. Duarte Pacheco of Portugal as the new President of the IPU, replacing Mexican MP, Hon. Gabriela Cuevas Barron who was elected in October 2017, and served a 3-year term, that ended in October 2020.

In his congratulatory message on behalf of the Africa Geo Political group, Speaker Katjavivi noted that SADC and Africa at large looked forward to working with the new President. He further thanked Hon. Barron, outgoing President, for her efforts in cementing relations between Namibia and the IPU.

Other Namibian MPs taking part in the meeting include, Hons. Elma Dienda and Cletius Sipapela.

The IPU Assembly is a global organisation of parliaments that brings together lawmakers to identify international challenges and make recommendations for action.
