The Minister-President of the German Bundesrat of the Federal Republic of Germany, Hon. Daniel Gunther is on a state visit to the country. Hon. Gunther paid a visit to the National Council yesterday (16 July 2018) where he met the Chairperson, Hon. Margaret Mensah Williams and other Members of the National Council. In her remarks to the German delegation, which included members from the political as well as business sector, Hon. Mensah-Williams stated that Namibia and Germany share a long history, now strengthened by the bilateral relations between the two countries. The Chairperson also identified potential areas of cooperation between the Bundesrat and the National Council that the two legislatures could explore. “These areas could possibly be the strengthening of parliamentary oversight, capacity building for Members, strengthening regional and local governance and staff exchanges and study visits; among others”, said –Mensah-Williams. With regards to developmental matters, the issue of rural water supply, housing, sanitation, education and conservation and human-wildlife conflict where all identified as possible cooperation areas.
In his address to the National Council MPs in the Chamber, Hon. Gunther acknowledged the pain and suffering caused by German settlers in the early 1900’s to the Nama and OvaHerero of Namibia, stressing that the matter was receiving the utmost attention. The Bundesrat President also implored on better cooperation between the two countries, calling the people of Germany and Namibia, brothers and sisters.
Upon his arrival, Günther met with the head of state, H.E. Dr. Hage Geingob. He is also expected to hold talks with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for International Relations and Cooperation, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, and Minister of Trade, Industry and SME Development, Tjekero Tweya and other high ranking government officials.
Hon. Gunther is the Minister President of the Federal State of Schleswig-Holstein. Each year, the Minister President of one of the German Federal States assumes the Presidency of the Bundesrat. The President of the Bundesrat is one of the highest representatives of the Federal Republic of Germany. The Bundesrat is the political representation of the 16 Federal States, otherwise known as ‘Länder’ of the Federal Republic of Germany. The Länder play an important role in the political system of the Federal Republic of Germany.
Namibia is the largest recipient of developmental aid from Germany in Africa.
