Windhoek - As is customary every year, the Speaker of National Assembly, Professor Peter Katjavivi today officiated at the opening of a budget review meeting that is intended to scrutinise the responsiveness of the more than N$72 billion national budget that was tabled by Finance minister, Iipumbu Shiimi yesterday (27/05/2020).

7th Parliament Resumes, 26 May 2020

National Assembly
 

Windhoek - The first session of the 7th Parliament that begun on the 24th of March this year but was halted due to the outbreak of the Covid 19 pandemic, resumes today, 26 May 2020.

The house is expected to debate the Appropriation Bill (Budget) to be tabled by the Minister of Finance on Wednesday, 27 May 2020. The debate on the second reading of the Appropriation Bill is scheduled to take place on the 2nd and 3rd June followed by the State of the Nation Address (SONA) by H.E. Dr. Hage Geingob, President of the Republic of Namibia. In keeping with state of emmergency regulations, the National Assembly has put in measures aimed at reducing the further spread of the virus. These measures include hand sanitisation, temperature screening as well as wearing of masks.

Only 50 members will be allowed in the chamber for the proceedings and other MPs will make use of the conference rooms through teleconferencing facilities.

Windhoek - National Council bid farewell one of its long serving staff member to Mr Thomas Shipo who was the Serjeant@Arms in the National Council today, 27 March 2020. The Secretary to the National Council Mr Tousy Namiseb stated at the farewell event that he met Mr Shipo 11 months ago and what he learned from him is humility, passion and commitment to his work. Every aspect of work dealing with Security or maintenance he owned it.. “Let the advise and wisdom you have gathered in the years remain useful” he said. He wished Mr Shipo all the best with his retirement and called upon him to continue to assist where he can when called upon. At the same occasion, Mr Namiseb, welcomed the newly appointed Deputy Searjeant @Arms Mr Peter Tjiramba. The National Council wish Mr Shipo all the best with the next chapter of his life.

Windhoek - Hon. Peter Katjavivi and Hon. Loide Kasingo retained their positions as Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly after the house went through a secret ballot last friday to elect the two presiding officers. Hon. Katjavivi received the most votes against UDF MP, Hon. Dudu Murorua while Hon. Kasingo competed with PDM lawmaker, Hon. Elma Dienda. The election of Speaker and his Deputy were preceded by the swearing in of members of the 7th National Assembly. Read more >>>
