Members of the National Council Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Housing are currently attending the 43rd Annual Southern African Transport Conference (SATC), underway from 7 to 10 July 2025 at the CSIR International Convention Centre in Pretoria.
The conference, being held under the theme “Mobility solutions to Southern African challenges,” brings together policymakers, academics, transport professionals, and private sector stakeholders from across the region.
It aims to explore innovative, climate-smart and inclusive mobility strategies to address persistent transport and infrastructure challenges in Southern Africa.
The delegation led by Chairperson of the Committee Hon. Alfeus Kaushiweni Abraham, participated in various plenary and technical sessions covering key topics such as transport policy, infrastructure investment, climate resilience, rural accessibility, public transport, and regional transport integration.The participation aligns with the Committee’s mandate.
The conference also features high-level presentations by experts from multilateral organisations, research institutions, and government ministries.Among the prominent figures that attended the conference was South Africa’s Minister of Transport, Hon. Barbara Creecy, keynote speaker and Professor Filippo Tomasello of the European Aviation Safety Agency, who shared insights on aviation safety and transport regulation.Speaking on the sidelines of the conference, Hon. Abraham emphasised the importance of regional cooperation in developing sustainable transport systems.
“Namibia cannot address infrastructure and mobility challenges in isolation. This conference provides us with a platform to learn, share best practices, and build networks that can inform our national strategies,” the chairperson said.
The lessons learned at the conference are expected to contribute to more informed parliamentary oversight and policy input on key issues affecting the transport sector in Namibia.
The Southern African Transport Conference is an annual event that provides an interdisciplinary platform for discussing and shaping the future of transport in the region.
It is accredited by the South African Institution of Civil Engineering and attracts over 700 delegates annually.
