The Chairperson of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Africa Region Executive Committee, Hon. Fabakary Tombong Jatta, has called on African parliamentarians to continue working together to strengthen democratic governance and development across the continent.
Hon. Jatta who serves as the Speaker of the Gambian Parliament made the remarks on Thursday, during the official opening of the 90th CPA Africa Region Executive Committee Meeting held in Swakopmund.
Addressing delegates from across Africa, hon Jatta said the meeting was part of the region’s ongoing efforts to strengthen democratic institutions and improve governance for the benefit of citizens.
“This meeting is so much more than just another item on our calendar. It is a continuation of our shared journey, a journey towards stronger democracies, better governance and a brighter future for the people we serve,” he said.
He said the newly elected executive committee has a responsibility to build on the work of previous leaders and ensure that the organisation continues to make a meaningful contribution to governance across the continent.
“As a newly elected Executive Committee, we carry a significant responsibility on our shoulders. Our focus will be to build on the strong foundation laid by those who came before us,” he said.
He added that the committee would focus on preparing for upcoming regional engagements and strengthening cooperation among member parliaments.
“We will look ahead to our upcoming Annual Regional Conference, engage in honest and robust dialogue, formulate thoughtful policy proposals, and ensure that our collective efforts truly make a difference across our beloved continent,” Hon. Jatta said.
