Served in World War II, (1942 – 1943); Police Officer, South African Railways, South Africa, (1952-1953); Joined the African National Congress (ANC), (1957); Was expelled from Cape Town (1958); Founding Member, Ovambo People’s Congress (which later became the Ovambo People’s Organisation [OPO] and then Swapo) (1957 – 1960); Was imprisoned on Robben Island, (1968 – 1984); Secretary-General, Swapo, (1984 – 1991).
