Members of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Natural Resources are today participating in the High-Level Workshop on Strengthening Biosafety Governance in Namibia, hosted by the National Commission for Research, Science & Technology at the Windhoek Country Club Resort.
Convened under the Strengthening the Implementation of the National Biosafety Frameworks in Southern Africa (SINBF) Project, the workshop is designed to enhance Parliament’s legislative and oversight capacity in reviewing the Biosafety Act of 2006 and the National Biotechnology Policy of 1999.
These discussions provide lawmakers with a comprehensive overview of Namibia’s National Biosafety Framework, highlighting key achievements, current implementation challenges, and the rationale for proposed amendments to strengthen the existing legal framework. The programme also draws on international best practices and emerging global trends in biosafety governance to support informed, evidence-based decision-making.
The engagement further promotes stronger collaboration between regulators and lawmakers to ensure Namibia develops a responsive, adaptive, and future-ready biosafety regulatory system capable of addressing emerging biotechnologies while safeguarding human health, biodiversity, and national development priorities.
