Vice Chairperson of the National Council Honourable Victoria Mbawo Kauma has called on fellow Members of Parliament to uphold the principles of accountability, transparency and integrity as they work to address challenges facing Namibians.
She also called on Members to treat each other with mutual respect during debates.
The Vice Chairperson made these remarks on Monday while opening the current session of the National Council, reminding MPs of the President’s call for public office bearers to recommit themselves to solving national issues.
“We convene at a time when the country continues to confront complex socio-economic challenges — from youth unemployment, inequality, and poverty to climate change and infrastructural gaps in rural areas. The deliberations and outcomes of this House must rise to meet these challenges with solutions that are bold, inclusive, and forward-thinking,” she said.
She added: “The session is an opportunity to scrutinise, amend and pass laws in favour of the needs of our people in the regions and communities we so proudly represent”.
The session was convened to consider four Bills passed by the National Assembly, namely; the Appropriation Bill, the roads Bill, the judiciary Amendment Bill and the Public Procurement Amendment Bill.
During the session, the Hon. Kauma also took the opportunity to announce the untimely passing of Mrs. Margret Wayea Muha, the wife of the Chairperson of the National Council, Hon. Lukas Sinimbo Muha.
Muha died in a fatal car accident on Friday last week.
On behalf of the National Council, the Vice Chairperson extended her heartfelt condolences to Hon. Muha and family.
