A-120 bed maternity ward which has been under construction at the Onandjokwe Lutheran Hospital in the Oshikoto Region since 2015 is nearing completion.
Officials at the hospital briefed the National Council Committee on Health, Social Welfare and Labour Affairs that the project was delayed due to changes in contractors.
The Committee visited the hospital on Friday as part of its verification visits to various regions to assess the progress made towards the implementation of its recommendations at state hospitals, health centres and clinics.
The Committee was briefed that since last year, the hospital has since contracted Defence contractor, August 26, to finalise the project.
Once completed, the new facility is set to become one of the largest of its kind in the public health sector.
It will host two operating theaters, a high-care unit for both mothers and babies, and a dedicated emergency department.
The ward is also expected to significantly increase the number of births handled by the hospital.
During the site visit, Oshikoto Region’s Health Director, Josua Nghipangelwa, reassured the Committee that he would ensure the new contractor meets the set deadline of October 2025.
