Windhoek – Members of Parliament from the South African National Council of Provinces (NCOP) that are visiting the National Council for benchmarking, paid a courtesy call on the Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Prof. Peter Katjavivi today (10/05/2022).
The NCOP is the equivalent of the National Council in Namibia. Hon. Katjavivi noted during the courtesy call that the two countries shared a rich history dating back to the days of liberation, adding that it was imperative that exchange visits of this kind are promoted in order to build capacities and strengthen parliamentary cooperation.
The Speaker further revealed that he has been elected together with his South African counterpart, Hon. Nosiviwe Mapisa – Nqakula as the only African Speakers to form part of the task force mandated by the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) to resolve the Russia/ Ukraine conflict, a gesture he says demonstrates confidence the world’s parliamentary body has in the two legislatures.
Leader of the South African delegation, Hon. Seiso Joel Mohai echoed similar sentiments adding that it was important for the two legislative bodies to work together in order to build strong institutions that would guide democracy.
