Katima Mulilo – Vice Chairperson of the National Council Hon. Victoria Kauma Mbawo has called on young people in the Zambezi region to start using their smartphones and social media to educate themselves about contemporary issues.
She urged the youth to also start getting involved in initiatives aimed at uplifting them such as regional youth forums where they can voice their concerns and positively contribute to the national policy discourse.
She made these remarks when she met the youth of Katima Mulilo Urban constituency on Monday.
The meeting was part of the vice Chairperson’s outreach campaign aimed at educating members of the public about the work and role of the National Council in the lawmaking process and encouraging active youth participation in national development.
She also urged the youth to participate in parliamentary initiatives such as the Junior National Council established to improve civic awareness, nurture democratic values, and promote youth participation in the legislative processes.
The JNC provides a structured platform for young people, particularly learners from secondary schools across all 14 regions, to engage with governance issues and simulate the functions of the National Council.
Hon. Kauma also made reference to the Rural Women Parliament With Men as their Partners which seeks to empower both genders through regional councils and constituencies.
The rural Women Parliament is attended by at least two women accompanied by a man from each region.

A local teacher was pleased by the informative session and shared his aspiration to organise a parliamentary visit for his students in the near future.
