The Parliamentary Standing Committee on International Relations, Defense and Security paid a courtesy visit to His Excellency Zhao Weiping, the Chinese Ambassador to the Republic of Namibia.
Ambassador Zhao warmly welcomed the delegation and expressed his appreciation for the visit. The Committee Chairperson, Honorable James Uerikua, provided an overview of the Committee’s mandate and reflected on the long-standing cordial relations between Namibia and China—relations that date back to Namibia’s liberation struggle.
Discussions focused on addressing legislative bottlenecks that may hinder trade between the two countries, as well as exploring ways in which the legislative bodies of Namibia and China can enhance coordination to advance cooperation in foreign relations, safety, and security. Both parties underscored the importance of continued collaboration in capacity development, training, and education to strengthen the work within these sectors.
His Excellency Zhao commended the Committee for its role in shaping national legislation on foreign affairs, defense, and security. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a close working relationship between the Namibian Parliament and the Chinese government and legislature to ensure continuity and growth in bilateral relations.
Ambassador Zhao further highlighted that Namibia and China are currently implementing the Beijing FOCAC (Forum on China-Africa Cooperation) Resolutions in line with agreements between the two governments. As a development partner, China sees great potential for deepening cooperation and reiterated the need to revive parliamentary exchanges between the two nations.
