The Parliament of the Republic of Namibia conducted educational awareness at various schools in the Omaheke Region from 22 to 26 June 2026.
The campaign aimed to promote public understanding of Parliament’s work as the legislative arm of Government. The sessions also sought to educate learners on the role, functions, and importance of Parliament in Namibia’s democratic system, including its responsibility to make laws, represent the people, oversee the Executive, and approve the national budget.
The interactive sessions provided learners with a nuanced perspective of the role of Parliament in a democratic society. Topics covered included the structure of Namibia’s bicameral Parliament, comprising the National Assembly and the National Council; the legislative process and the law-making process; the roles of the Presiding Officers; the symbols of authority and standards of conduct observed by Members of Parliament; the process of presidential assent to Bills; and public access to parliamentary proceedings.
Through this outreach initiative, learners were encouraged to develop an interest in parliamentary democracy, civic participation, and responsible citizenship. They were also informed about opportunities to participate in the law-making process through Parliament’s established platforms, namely the Children’s Parliament and the Junior National Council.
This undertaking reaffirms Parliament’s commitment to amplify public interest in the work of the Legislature by raising awareness and empowering citizens with knowledge of how they can actively participate in the law-making process. By fostering greater public engagement, Parliament seeks to continuously enable citizens to contribute to shaping and influencing citizen-centered legislation that responds to the developmental needs and aspirations of the country.
