Speaker of the National Assembly Hon. Dr. Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila has praised the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) for its role in preserving the country’s languages, culture and national identity over the past 35 years.
Speaking at the broadcaster’s anniversary celebrations in Windhoek on Friday, Hon. Kuugongelwa-Amadhila said NBC occupies a unique position in Namibia’s media landscape because of its ability to reach audiences across the country in multiple languages.
She noted that NBC broadcasts in 10 local languages, providing citizens from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds with access to information in their mother tongues.
According to the Speaker, this role extends beyond news and entertainment, contributing directly to the preservation of Namibia’s cultural heritage and strengthening national unity.
She said language is an important carrier of history, values and identity, making public broadcasting a vital tool for ensuring that Namibia’s diverse cultures remain visible and accessible to future generations.
The Speaker also highlighted NBC’s extensive national footprint, saying few institutions are able to connect communities across urban and rural areas as effectively as the public broadcaster.
She said this reach places NBC in a unique position to promote social cohesion, encourage informed public participation and ensure that all Namibians, regardless of location or language, have access to information.
The Speaker urged the broadcaster to continue embracing its public service mandate while adapting to the changing media environment and growing digital audiences.
She said NBC’s strength lies not only in its ability to inform the nation, but also in its contribution to preserving the country’s rich cultural diversity and shared national identity.
