Namibia will host the Southern African Development Community Organisation of Public Accounts Committees (SADCOPAC) Sub-Committee Meetings, Peer Review Programme and Training Workshop from 18 to 23 May 2026 in Swakopmund.
The regional gathering is expected to bring together Public Accounts Committees, parliamentary officials, oversight institutions, civil society representatives and accountability partners from across the SADC region to strengthen cooperation in promoting transparency, accountability and sound public financial management.
Speaking at the briefing, Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee, Hon. Hendrick Gaebeb said the event reflects the region’s collective commitment to strengthening parliamentary oversight and advancing good governance practices.
Approximately 100 delegates are expected to participate in the programme.
SADCOPAC was established in 2003 as an autonomous association of Public Accounts Committees from national parliaments within SADC Member States. Its primary objective is to promote good governance, transparency and accountability in the management and utilisation of public resources throughout the region.
The organisation serves as a recognised regional platform for Public Accounts Committees to exchange knowledge, share experiences, strengthen oversight functions and support one another in advancing sound public financial management practices.
SADCOPAC currently comprises 13 Member States, with Namibia remaining an active member since its establishment.
The upcoming event will be hosted jointly by the National Assembly and the National Council, in collaboration with the SADCOPAC Secretariat, to ensure the successful planning and implementation of the programme.
This year’s training and peer review activities will be held under the theme: “Strengthening Oversight Capacities for Sustainable Development: Enhancing Accountability and Transparency in Public Financial Management.”
Namibia has previously hosted several SADCOPAC engagements and activities over the years.
This includes the 2022 Office Bearers meeting, the 2018 Annual General Meeting and Regional Training Workshop and the 2006 SADCOPAC conference held in Windhoek.
The country has additionally hosted a number of technical workshops and meetings focusing on strategic planning, public audit legislation and the operationalisation of SADCOPAC initiatives.
Next week’s workshop is expected to further reinforce regional cooperation and enhance the oversight capacity of Public Accounts Committees in the SADC region.
